Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. Our principal aim is that children leave Tyntesfield Primary School with a wide range of happy and rich memories in music, formed through interesting, enjoyable and exciting experiences, full of opportunity and enrichment, thus enhancing each child’s awareness of their own abilities and strengths as musical learners. Our high-quality music education will engage and inspire pupils to develop a love and passion for music as well as developing their ability as musicians, consequently increasing their self-confidence, creativity, sense of achievement and well-being. In addition, it is important to develop a curiosity for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the value and importance of all types of music, and an unbiased respect for the role that music may wish to be expressed in any person’s life.
We are committed to ensuring children understand the importance of music in the wider community, and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in music, in a variety of different contexts. As pupils progress through the school, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.Â

Music
We aim for our children to:
- Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians.Â
- Learn to sing and use their voices to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn an instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence.
- Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.
How Our Music Curriculum Is Implemented At Tyntesfield
- Whole Class Instrumental Sessions – We are extremely fortunate to work in partnership with Trafford Music Service, who provide their musical expertise and skill to all children from Year 1 to 6, supporting the delivery of the whole school musical curriculum. Each child in KS1 will receive half a year of TMS led sessions and children in KS2 will undertake 10 weeks of sessions. These provide them with the opportunity to learn an instrument from across the range of instrument families (see table below for example instruments), allowing them to experience at least 6 different instruments. At the end of each unit of instrumental learning, parents and grandparents will be invited into school to watch a concert, which allows the children to perform in front of an audience as part of an ensemble.Â
- In class music learning - Class teachers deliver an additional unit of music to the pupils, using Kapow lesson material, where they will experience a variety of genres and styles of music to immerse themselves in and provide them with opportunities to progressively develop their composition and technology skills.
- Individual Music Lessons – To further enhance the children’s musical development, Tyntesfield also provides opportunities for 1:1 instrumental lessons, or small group lessons, with our peripatetic music teachers. A variety of instrumental lessons are available in school, so if you would like further information please contact the school office for more details.
- Music of the half term - In cooperation with the Model Music Curriculum, each class will focus on a particular piece of music each half term. They will listen to this music regularly, allowing them to analyse and express their opinions about a range of music from different cultures, traditions and historical periods.
- Bi-weekly Singing and Listening - Children attend bi-weekly singing assemblies, where they have the opportunity to sing as a Key Stage and then as a whole school. They are exposed to a wide variety of music styles during these assemblies.Â
- Junior choir – To provide children with further opportunities to sing as a group, we have weekly junior choir sessions, where the pupils get to experience and learn a wide range of vocal songs and compositions. The children perform at all major school events across the year.
- Exposure to Musicians – Children have the opportunity to watch performances, both live and recorded, of professional singers and musicians at events across the year.
