Bonjour!
At Tyntesfield, we have a modern, progressive and exciting approach to Modern Foreign Languages (MFL), with a focus on French. Our main aim is for our children to value language learning and for our children to develop a love of languages, showing enthusiasm, respect, and confidence at ‘having a go’ at French, with access to exciting cultural experiences.
Our aims (desired outcomes)
To strengthen children's speaking and listening skills, whilst progressively building up the foundations for grammar, reading and writing.
To build our teaching and learning around our pillars of Phonics, French Culture, and Grammar.
To develop transferrable skills, familiarising children with language strategies, making connections between languages, and seeing the wider benefits of learning different languages and experiencing different cultures, up to Year 6 and beyond.Â
Across the year groups, our intent is to strengthen children’s speaking and listening skills, whilst progressively building up the foundations for reading and writing. Our French lessons at Tyntesfield are a rich vehicle for developing transferable skills; making connections between languages; seeing the wider benefits of learning MFL and experiencing different cultures.
We see the huge benefits of having children start French as early as possible to build on their enthusiasm and confidence, and therefore EYFS and KS1 have short, fun sessions of French, complemented by access
to French language clubs. In KS2, they further develop their language skills through our scheme of work, with French delivered by our specialist language teacher, Madame Rawcliffe, and our class teachers.
Extra-curricular language provision is also provided within our lunchtime and after-school French clubs in both KS1 and KS2.Â
Merci!Â
