Hello and welcome to 1MG!

Our names are Mrs Gilmour and Mrs Macdonald, and we are delighted to be part of the Year 1 team. We have a highly dedicated team with Mrs Rowe and Mrs Bennison also supporting our learning and growth.

As we begin our new KS1 journey, there are so many new opportunities and discoveries to be made … all sprinkled with lots of fun! We aim to enable a smooth transition from Reception to Year 1 by creating a warm, nurturing and stimulating learning environment in which everyone is happy, supported and successful. We use a points reward system, with counters and Most Valued Players to celebrate individual and group achievements, which helps motivate our children to look after one another and foster team spirits. It rewards positive behaviour and helps them develop a strong sense of responsibility for themselves, their peers and the wider world.

In Class 1MG, we strive to nurture children’s creativity, develop a ‘can do’ attitude, encouraging independent thinking and learning. We believe in creating a safe place for children to ‘wobble’ when learning and to be empowered by making mistakes. We continue to develop a positive growth mindset, reminding the children that by working hard together, we can ‘bounce back’ from setbacks and look at problems and mistakes in a positive way, understanding that they help our brains to grow and strengthen in response to challenges.

Throughout Year 1, we discover many exciting curriculum subjects such as Homes, Toys and Games in the Past and Great Adventurers. In Science, we investigate plants, animals and the seasons and in Art, we explore the work of famous artists such as Pablo Picasso and Georgia O’Keefe. In Music, we learn how to play the ukulele and perform like superstars!
