Curriculum

ENGLISH involves reading, writing, speaking and listening, spelling, and handwriting. We have a structured reading scheme which runs through the school, plus various Language development schemes. We place a high emphasis on literacy and all children undertake a Literacy Hour each day.

MATHEMATICS is taught in daily Numeracy sessions. Emphasis is placed on basic number skills, a breadth of mathematical experience, and plenty of practical work to help understanding.

SCIENCE provides the basis for many of our topic themes. Our approach is based on practical investigations undertaken to help develop scientific knowledge, skills and attitudes.

PERSONAL AND SOCIAL EDUCATION will play a major part in the children's experiences. This will involve development of qualities and attitudes, moral considerations, and Sex Education. The Sex Education programme at Tyntesfield has three elements :

1.   The statutory elements of the Science National Curriculum involving Life processes and living things.

2.   The elements of Personal and Social Education and R.E. which relate to this area e.g. dealing with emotions

and feelings, developing positive relationships, etc.

3.  Specific topics covered in the Upper Juniors --- changes at puberty and the basic understanding of

  reproduction.

Under the Education Act 1993 pupils can be withdrawn by their parents from the part of Sex Education that is outside the compulsory elements contained in the Science National Curriculum. Parents wishing to exercise this right are invited to discuss the matter with the Headteacher. Any materials used in the delivery of Sex Education are available for parents to view.

TECHNOLOGY, HISTORY, GEOGRAPHY are taught as part of the topics studied by a particular class. Topics are planned to cover History and Geography, both local and world, and each topic will include a Technology project.

INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY involves the use of computers and other technology throughout the curriculum. We have a 18 PC networked computer suite and there is at least one PC in each class.

MUSIC has a high profile in the school with each class having regular sessions. There is the opportunity to pursue interests in this area in out-of-school sessions.

ART also is greatly valued. The children are given a wide range of experience to develop skills in all areas of artwork.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION follows the guidelines of the Local Authority Policy Statement. An assembly, which can take a variety of forms, is held each day and is broadly Christian in nature. Parents have the right to withdraw their children from R.E. and worship if they choose, and are invited to discuss alternative arrangements with the Headteacher
